I wrote this song while driving down Boulder Canyon. I was in the midst of caring for my partner with stage 3+ cancer, my seriously ill sister in another state and my elderly mom who lives locally. I was feeling massively "underwater" by the weight of all of this and started singing "I feel like I hit rock bottom". When I got to town I pulled into our local Hardware store and wrote the song in it's entirety. This is a song for all of the "unseen" caregivers out there who take on the weight of the world to help those they love get by. I love this song, it is spare and open and vulnerable which is how you feel when you are giving out so much.
You find out who your friends are
When your world turns upside down
Some people turn their backs
While others stick around
And they all say
You’re gonna be okay
How do they know
You’re gonna be okay
CHORUS
Are they waking up in the morning
Standing in my shoes
Drinking my cup of coffee
And singing the blues
I feel like I'm invisible
Sitting in the waiting room
Like an apparition
Everyone looks right through
But I am here everyday
I'm telling you
You’re gonna be okay
CHORUS
Cause you wake up in the morning
Standing in your shoes
Drinking your cup of coffee
And singing the blues
BRIDGE
And just so you know
With our world turned upside down
I won't turn my back on you baby
I'll be around
I feel like I'm invincible
Even when I'm feeling weak
I feel like I am swimming back
From that ocean gray and bleak
And I see you
Standing on the shore
And I hear you say
We're gonna be okay
CHORUS
Cause we wake up in the morning
Standing in our shoes
Drinking our cup of coffee
And killing the blues
Killing the blues
I feel like I hit rock bottom
Rock bottom's not the place for me
