about

Song Bio:
The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut song came to me after reading the story of a group of young Irish lads who had come over from Ireland in 1832 to work in the states for the Philadelphia Rail Road under the supervision of Phillip Duffy. Within six weeks of their arrival, all 57 men had died of Cholera or had been beaten to death by the locals and buried in an unmarked, mass grave. Their families never heard from them again. An excavation was started in 2006 by two young men in the area who had listened to stories from their grandfather about "the lights in the woods and the visions of the blue and green ghosts dancing in a circle". They started the excavation on their own and the first body they found was John Ruddy who they were able to match to records from the ships log indicating his height 5'6" and a missing molar that was a genetic trait in his clan. In 2013 they returned John Ruddy's remains to Ireland and his entire family came to the funeral to welcome him home. They found closure after 180 years of never having known what happened to young John. The excavation remains active today with several top scientists now assisting the original two men with the dig.

lyrics

Buried In A Heap
For two hundred years
Reduced to dust and bone

John Ruddy was his name
With fifty-six men
Who hailed from County Donegal

Their ship set sail from Derry in 1832
With hope in their hearts for a brand new start
In the land of opportune

Sixteen hour days, little food or pay
Duffy worked them on the rails
Panic struck when the Cholera came
Made them wish they'd never set sail

And the locals they were wary
The boys tried to run away
They came out of the darkness
And struck them down that day

And on the eve of Winter
You can see them dance and strut
All blue and green like fire
The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut
And on the eve of Winter
You can see them dance and strut
All blue and green like fire
The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut

Centuries passed, the bones were found
And they sent John Ruddy Home
Back to Ardara, in County Donegal
Under a Celtic cross of stone

And the other men remain
Without a chance to point the blame
Their peace only disturbed
By the sound of passing trains.

And on the eve of Winter
You can see them dance and strut
All blue and green like fire
The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut
And on the eve of Winter
You can see them dance and strut
All blue and green like fire
The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut
The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut
Oh The Ghosts Of Duffy's Cut.
